Breast cancer is quite common, and can affect both women and men. It is known that women are more at risk of developing breast cancer, especially if they have never given birth, if they had a menstrual cycle before the age of 12 or a late menopause. Other risks for this condition include: increasing age, obesity, smoking,
excessive alcohol consumption, prolonged exposure to ionizing radiation and
various genetic factors.
Symptoms related to breast cancer include the presence of lumps in various parts of the breast that may also feel hard, as well as any changes in the colour, shape or composition of the surrounding skin. One may also notice fluids coming out of the nipples, weight loss or fatigue. It is important to self-examine the breasts regularly and speak to your doctor if you notice any changes, so that more tests can be done; such as mammography or ultrasound.
It would be very wise to accept the invitation to do the breast screening. The aim is to detect certain breast conditions at an early stage, thus improving the prognosis as well.
One should also seek to adopt a healthy lifestyle by eating nutritious foods, increasing exercise, losing excess weight, not smoking and reducing alcohol consumption.
