In today’s digital era, one can easily find himself to a continuous exposure to blue light emitted by technological devices, such as computers, smartphones, tablets and televisions. Indeed, excessive screen time is a common pitfall in our generation, as it can cause regular eyestrain and focusing problems, albeit research has shown that the chances of getting permanent vision or retinal damages are quite low. Nonetheless, it is best to start taking precautions in order to maintain good eye health and prevent digital eyestrain, which could also lead to dry eyes, ocular irritation which may cause a burning sensation as well as eye fatigue from ocular muscle overuse.
Blue-light filters may help in lessening eye strain, especially in those persons who continuously use technological devices at their place of work, even though strictly speaking, the American Institute of Health has found no concrete research evidence that these blue-light filters preserve retinal damage in the long run. Moreover, the text size on electronic devices and contrast should be increased, whilst the colour temperature is ideally lowered to reduce the blue light emissions.
One should also take frequent breaks from screen time by applying the 20/20/20 rule, as in for every 20 minutes of screen time, one should look away for 20 seconds and focus on an object that is approximately 20 feet away. Furthermore, it is best to keep electronic devices, at least at arm’s length. Artificial eye lubricants may also help in relieving dry eyes. For those who use glasses, it is also important to get regular eye check- ups.
